CASUAL VACANCY - I QUIT YOU!!

Casual Vacancy is an epic fail for me.

To know me is to understand that I do not quit books easily.  I think I quit maybe two books a year.

I read all the way to page 186.  Even though I understand the plot, I find myself not really caring at all about the outcome.

I am so disappointed!  First, that darn book was expensive.  Second, I never got on the Harry bandwagon.  I really, really, really wanted to love J.K. Rowlings like the rest of you do.  Third, I wasted about 2 weeks trying to convince myself to read this book every night and opting to go to bed early instead and now my book total for October is going to be dismal.

Blah!

  1. Aw shoot. What a disappointment! I haven't read any of Rowlings' books yet. I thought I was the only one. I've been plowing through The Lacuna by Babara Kingsolver. The first 150 pages were slow. I like the second half much better.

    1. I was suffering a little mini-depression and I couldn't figure out why. Then I was discussing my dilemma about the book at lunch and my literary work pal said just quit it then. I took a deep breath and did that.

  2. I rarely give up on a book either. It is also a newsworthy event with me too!

If something is that un-engaging as you describe there is no point devoting even more precious time to it.

The plot description of this book sounds interesting, but I have heard some not so good things about it from others as well.

    1. I know. I've been avoiding other reviews and now I'm going to go and commiserate with all the yuck ones. It will make me feel better.

  3. I have had The Casual Vacancy on loan for two weeks now and can't seem to get into it. It's just so easy to put down in favour of another book. I am determined to give it more of a chance though, so I renewed it today. I refuse to compare it to Harry Potter but am comparing it to novels in the same vein. Please, J.K., convince me I am not wasting my time.

    1. Okay! That's the spirit. I'm anxious to see your review. I'm trying to shake it all off still. I hate quitting...

    1. It might move faster if enough people quit it :-)

  6. Why buy books, use the library!!!

I am on hiatus from The Moonstone, though I think I will finish it. I am over halfway through. I just was only getting through a few pages a day, and yes, I too obsess over my "monthly reading list"

    1. Do you read something between Moonstone? I already have a school book started that is a little hard to read and then C.V. I just couldn't tolerate my reading life anymore! On the up side, I found a new author and I think you are going to like this one for sure (not just a maybe).

  7. Oh no. I am sorry it was a disappointment. :( I have been on the fence about reading it - I think I will just forgo it. I trust your judgement.

    1. Now I feel pressured (LOL). It was just too slow moving for me and I am pretty patient with books.

    2. Lol - no pressure at all. I just usually tend to agree with your opinion on books. ;)

  8. I have been avoiding reviews of this book like the plague. I didn't want my mind to be muddled before I got my hands on it myself, and I was waiting for a review from someone that I trust. You are that gal :)

Now I know and I probably won't bother reading this. I'll keep her in my heart as the exalted author of the Harry Potter series and that is that.

    1. Yes, may she rest in peace as the creator of Harry!

  9. It's hard for me to quit a book once I start it, too. I'm sorry to hear about this review because I really enjoyed the Harry Potter series and was interested in seeing J.K. Rowling venture into adult territory.

    1. She's an excellent writer. She just needs to make sure she kicks the plot into high gear from starting gate. My goodness. Watching paint dry would be faster than her plot.

So thank for visiting my blog and entering. I'll announce that you're the winner on my Monday post. I'll wait to hear from you. Congratulations and Happy Friday! :D

  13. That's too bad. Like you I'm usually more disappointed by the wasted time. You are the second person I've heard with this reaction.

    1. Darn it! I tried really hard. I instantly gave it away to someone at work so that I didn't have to look at it anymore.

  14. I've basically given up on it too. I got to page 118 or something and... it's just sitting on top of the entertainment center right now. It's been there for like 2 weeks now.

What's most disappointing is that I DO love her and Harry Potter... but this book was just a little too dull for me. So many depressing characters, and very little action or plot moving things forward.
